Want to get Borderlands a little early and stay up a little late? …Basically, you now have only one excuse for not getting Borderlands tonight if you’re into the game and you’re in the US, and that is not wanting to go to GameStop and stand in line at midnight. Which is actually pretty reasonable.

So apparently Borderlands is releasing at a lot of Gamestops tonight at midnight.  I’ve actually been interested in this game recently and plan on playing the 4-player coop mode when I can get my hands on it.  Which might be unexpectedly soon.

It seems that the leaders of the L4D2 Boycott (Agent Chaos and Walking_Target) have decided that the goal of the group was accomplished and that the group no longer serves a purpose.

Agent Chaos has this to say on the matter,

The recently released Crash Course was just the start. Future updates will continue to roll in, and 4v4 matchmaking is first in line. Valve has confirmed to us that it’ll be available before the release of L4D2. Also don’t forget, we have another DLC pack confirmed for sometime in the near future and of course, there will be bug fixes. This is as good as it can get people.

The group is filled with trolls and spammers saying that they sold out to Valve.  Valve recently flown them to their HQs to preview Left 4 Dead 2 and talka bout concerns for the boycott.

Yesterday a Chinese site had revealed what was apparently the last two campaigns in Left 4 Dead 2, those were “Hard Rain” and “Dead Center”.  This has now been confirmed by Xbox360Achievements.org who has the juicy details about new and otherwise rumored futures, like a defibrillator to revive teammates.  Check out the rest over at their site.

Super Street Fighter IV has been announced today as a stand-alone separate title.  The game will include 8 new characters, improved online play, and balance changes to all the current characters based of feedback from the community.  Additionally, even though the game is a separate title, it will not be sold full price but closer to the price of what you would pay for DLC.

Currently 3 out of the 8 new characters are confirmed whom are Deejay, T.Hawk, and Juri.

Owners of Street Fighter IV will also receive a bonus when they buy Super Street Fighter IV.

Today, Valve released Crash Course, a DLC campaign add on for Left 4 Dead that aims to close the gap between the first and second campaign.  It is available on PC free of charge and $7 for Xbox 360 owners.

In addition to the new campaign, several new survival maps were added along with a few fixes.

• A new campaign, “Crash Course”, is now available for play in Campaign, Versus and Survival modes
• In Versus mode, all weapons, pills, health packs, molotovs, pipe bombs and other items will now be identical for the second round of a chapter
• Matchmaking has had several improvements to make finding and joining games even faster
• Ten all new “Crash Course” achievements have been added

Valve has also decided to sell Left 4 Dead 50% off until October 2nd, thats only $14.99.

So lately I’ve been pretty busy – this week especially since I’ve been sick, tests are coming up, and I’ve gotten a healthy dose of X-Box live gaming.  One of my housemates has moved his X-box 360 downstairs to the living room, where we have a 52” HDTV setup.  So I retrieved my gamertag and introduced them to the few games I actually own on X-box live.  These include Castle Crashers and Ikaruga.  Another one of my friends here has convinced me to buy Geometry Wars 2, which is also thoroughly awesome.  So let’s sum up what me and my housemates been playing for hours on end the past week.

What we first started playing a lot is Geometry Wars 2: Retro Evolved.  This game is fun by yourself, or with others.  You will find yourselves taking turns most of the time though, in single player since all anyone wants to do is try to beat the high scores that everyone else has posted.  The only controls involve the left analog to steer, the right analog to shoot, and the triggers for bombs.  There are 6 modes, which are more than enough to provide hours of competitive fun with.  Deadline, King, Evolved, Pacifist, Waves, and Sequence.  Each one is a very different style of play, but all of them require a mastery of the basic controls.  The game is easy enough to pick up and play, but becomes very hard once you start playing competitively.  Especially when you look at some of the top scores on the leaderboards.  They’re ridiculous.

I’m pretty everyone with an X-box live account should be familiar with Castle Crashers.  The game that was created by the same guys who created Newgrounds, this game is a side scrolling multiplayer platformer for tons of fon.  You and up to 3 other friends can play along.  You’re basically one of the characters you see above (there are more too, as well as unlockable ones).  You have a weapon to melee people with, magic attacks, pets that help with different things, and a few items.  The game is easy – you walk to the right and kill everything in your path.  It’s actually pretty challenging at some parts without the right preparation, but isn’t so much where it’s not fun.  As a few of my housemates have been showing me, it definitely has replay value as well; despite the fact they’ve already beaten it 3 times over, they want to keep playing.

And last but not least, is Ikaruga.  I’m sure every gamer has heard of this notorious one as well.  This one hasn’t been as popular with my housemates and that’s understandable.  Shoot-em ups appeal to a select crowd.  Especially ones of this caliber.  A top-down shooter where you’re a ship that can absorb orbs of the same color and get destroyed by ones of the opposite.  You can change the color orientation of your ship but clicking B, but this doesn’t make the game any less challenging.  I can’t say this is the hardest shoot-em up I’ve ever played (see Perfect Cherry Blossom on Insane), but it’s still pretty challenging.  Especially since I’m by no means a serious shmup gamer.

Kicking back with a few arcade style games for a week has actually been pretty nice.  Getting away from serious games such Batman, Resident Evil 5, and the like, has probably been pretty healthy for my gamer mentality.  Not to mention much more enjoyable with a lot of people around one system too.  Playing the games over the internet is a lot of fun, don’t get me wrong; but there’s something more personal about sitting next to the person you’re trying to destroy (or help out) on the screen.  Just my two cents at least.

News has come forth that Left 4 Dead 2 has been refused classification in Australia.  While it isn’t necessarily banned, it has the same effect. Below are the reasons highlighted in the official report.

* The game contains violence that is high in impact and is therefore unsuitable for persons aged under 18 to play.

* It notes that this violence is “inflicted upon ‘the Infected’ who are living humans infected with a rabies-like virus that causes them to act violently”.

* The report singles out the use of melee weapons as those that “inflict the most damage” and cause “copious amounts of blood spray and splatter (sic), decapitations and limb dismemberment.. or even cause intestines to spill from the wounds”.

* In conclusion, the Board finds that the “interactive nature of the game increases the overall impact of the frequent and intense depictions of violence. This coupled with the graphic depictions of blood and gore combine to create a playing impact which is high.”

* Interestingly, the report also reveals that it wasn’t a unanimous decision and that “a minority of the Board is of the opinion that the violence is strong in playing impact and therefore warrants an MA15+ classification” instead. However, the majority voted to refuse classification.

Kotaku Australia has contacted EA for comment and they have yet to respond.

Remember the full refund promised by a Wolfenstein developer if the game sold more than Madden? Well you can forget about that, NPD Group has released sales for Wolfenstein and revealed the game sold poorly.

Combined sales of Xbox, PS3 and PC and you get a total of 106,000 units.  Even with Wolfenstein’s relatively favorable reviews, those sales are complete crap and not looking good for Raven (which has also laid off people recently), and Activision.

So apparently yesterday in Japan, there was some ad on YouTube saying that the release date would actually be announced today.  Some people were able to figure out how to manipulate the ad to actually display the date, and thus presented it yesterday leaked as December 17, 2009. 

Today, it was confirmed that Final Fantasy XIII will be released on that day according to the people at Kotaku.  Well, as you may have guessed, this is only for the Japanese release of the game.  Western fans (myself) will probably have to wait for some time before seeing it in 2010.

So GameTrailers has released a trailer revealing BioShock 2’s multiplayer gameplay.  After watching the trailer though, I wasn’t thoroughly impressed with any of the aspects of it.  I think it’s cool that you get to use a lot of the powers you receive in BioShock on other people, but it makes me feel that it will make playing extremely unrewarding and very spam-like.  And throwing big-daddy into the mix just seems to add to the chaotic mix.  I mean, it looks like it could be fun for a little while, but none of the big multiplayer games (TF2 *cough*) will feel any vibrations from this at all.

But enough of my thoughts – what do you think?

Here we go again, another XBLA title now takes the crown of “the most downloaded single-player title in Xbox Live Arcade history”.  The game is reported to have sold over 200,000 copies in it’s first week of release.

Shadow Complex is a side-scroller with heavy influence from Metroid, and powered by Unreal Engine 3.  It looks great.

Following the critical acclaim of the new Batman game (yes finally!), it has been given the record of the ’Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever’.

It’s kind of odd to me that such a record exists but you know, Guinness World Records seem to have records for everything nowadays.

I myself can’t wait for the PC version of the game to release, I hate how the PC versions are always delayed.  I have played the game on PS3 however, and it’s definitely one of the best looking games this summer.  The game-play is enticing and feels very fluid.

Wait, that’s in 4 days right?  So [Activision] will be releasing this new iteration of Wolfenstein, and I think it actually looks pretty decent.  It’s not a game that I’m absolutely waiting for, but it’s about to come out and having played [Return to Castle Wolfenstein], I figure I’ll probably give this a spin eventually; even moreso since I haven’t played anything in a while (even though I had all summer).

So we all remember Return to Castle Wolfenstein, right?  I actually enjoyed playing that game back in the day.  The single player was fun, albeit short and fairly easy.  The multiplayer aspect of the game though, occupied a lot more of my time since most of my friends also played.  You could pick classes such as Medic, Field Ops, Engineer, or Soldier – each with different weapons and skill sets.  A free multiplayer version came out that added new maps and more features called Enemy Territory was also released.  Shortly after some time though, everyone started hacking the game and made multiplayer no longer fun.

I’ve never actually played Wolfenstein 3D, the first of the Wolfenstein games to come out, but judging from what I’ve seen, it feels very doom-like; it was a DOS game after all.  The premise of the game is that you’re an American soldier trying to escape from a Nazi stronghold.  I think in the end you end up killing the Fuhrer himself.

But enough about the old; it’s time for the new!  Wolfenstein from Activision obviously looks much better than its predecessors, especially since Return to Castle Wolfenstein was released all the way in 2001.  The graphics aren’t over the top, but I think I like the way it looks from the screenshots off the [website].

Wolfenstein is actually the sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, so there should be similarities or at least references to its predecessors I assume.  The release trailer was made public yesterday at [Quakecon] and has quickly found its way onto the internet, so I bring it to you here, courtesy of [GameTrailers]:

It seems like there will be a lot of Nazi zombies going around, along with a bunch of other supernatural things – the usual RTCW stuff.  The release trailer kind of hints at a story where you’re an American soldier that was captured and is now trying to escape from the castle.  Wait, what?  I think I just experienced deja vu as this plot seems familiar, but we’ll see – I have to play the game first.  With only 5 days left, hopefully it’ll be sooner, rather than later – oh if only school wasn’t starting so soon.

Following yesterday’s news of GRIN’s rumored financial turmoil, today comes official confirmation that the studio is now dead.

The company had issued a statement on their website:

It is with a heavy heart we announce today that GRIN has been forced to close its doors. This as too many publishers have been delaying their payments, causing an unbearable cashflow situation.

After twelve years of hard work, employing hundreds of wonderfully talented men and women, it is over. It has been a great adventure and the GRIN family has experienced what few have.

Looking back at twelve years of games, titles such as Ballistics, Bandits, GRAW 1 & 2, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Wanted: Weapons of Fate, Terminator: Salvation, Bionic Commando and our unreleased masterpiece that we weren’t allowed to finish; it has been a great ride.

However, it isn’t exactly the end for GRIN as former employee Peter Björklund, has decided to form Outbreak Studios. In addition, a couple of games in development are still using GRIN’s Diesel Engine.

It’s always sad to see developer studios close down, while I disliked the GRAW games, I actually thought Wanted: Weapons Of Fate game was pretty good although a bit short.

A new system update for Xbox 360 has been released.  The full changelog can be found here.  The main changes include:

• While you can browse and purchase Avatar items and full Xbox 360 games in the console with this update, the ability to add these items your Xbox 360 download queue from Xbox.com will be available this Thursday.
• Xbox LIVE integration with Twitter, Facebook and Last.FM will be available later this year.
• Zune Video Marketplace will also ship later this fall when it will replace the current Video Marketplace.

The new update brings an avatar marketplace, improved Netflix support, and Games on Demand.  However, social networking support is not yet implemented.  It apparently will be coming in the fall.

Some rather hilarious memes have spawned from E3.  First one featuring a minor glitch during Microsoft’s E3 conference while demonstrating Natal with the avatar.

The other is from the Sony press conference, when Kaz Hirai was talking about Gran Turismo for the PSP, he had a translator with him.  The problem is that the translator had a notepad with him writing things down on it, however it looked as if he was preoccupied the whole time.

Here is some gameplay footage from the Valve E3 booth.  It doesn’t look all that different from the first one, the sequel features a new cast, all new weapons, locations, special infected and AI director 2.0.  Not to mention, it boasts a significantly different color pallete that contrasts with the first L4D’s dark gritty mood.  Valve believes this new content is good enough to put a full blown sequel for however many fans believe otherwise.

Many people seem displeased that a sequel is being announced only 7 months after L4D came out.   It seems that Valve went immediately onto the sequel while giving L4D lackluster support which was the survival mode, 2 versus maps for the last 2 campaigns and one small map for survival mode.  Steam forums have erupted with angry consumers over this announcement.  As a result, a boycott group has been formed currently boasting over 3000 members.

A Steam forum thread currently 85+ pages has a list of the main complaints against L4D2.

- Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered
- Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release
- The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games
- The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes
- The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far
- L4D2 is too colourful to fit in with L4D1′s visual aesthetic
- The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome
- L4D2′s release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before
- The community has lost faith in Valve’s former reputation for commitment to their games post-release

Kojima today announced at the Microsoft keynote that Metal Gear Solid would be coming to Xbox360 in a form of a completely new game staring Raiden.  This is quite exciting news for the Xbox people wanting to get some MGS action.

Kojima Productions site still has two hours on the reveal countdown where we should expect to see even more details about this new game.

Square-Enix popped up during the Microsoft press conference to demo first ever footage of FFXII running on Xbox360.  It is looking as specatacular as ever, this footage also includes the first look at a summon.  This is CAM footage, when a direct line video is available, it will be posted.
