Gizmodo confirms Apple Tablet!

[Brian Lam] has recently confirmed the existence of the Apple Tablet.  He had gotten an encrypted message from someone who wanted to give him the scoop on the device.

Apple Tablet

Brian recounts his whole tale of getting in contact with his source, ‘[redacted],’ and what [redacted] says, but here are the details you probably want to hear the most:

  • The Tablet will have a 10″ screen
  • Probably gonna look like a giant iPhone/iTouch
  • Same black resin back, same home button as iPhone/iTouch
  • Two Editions: 1. Webcam 2. Mysterious Education Use
  • Device can act as a secondary screen for iMacs/MacBooks
  • Cost: $700-$900
  • Tentative Release: Holiday Season ’09

Tablet

My impressions?  This is going to be another overly expensive apple ‘toy’ that will come out for everyone that can afford it.  The cost absolutely irks me, but I guess it’s nothing new from Apple.  Oh well – no Apple products for me still.

If they’ve got a tablet, I highly doubt it’ll be OS X with an OSK, and I also doubt it’ll be the iPhone OS’s interface. I think it’d be some marriage between them, along with some UI features that fully take advantage of a large touchscreen.

The main flaw with Windows tablets is that, well, they run Windows. Windows isn’t designed for tablet. It’s clumsy. Windows 7 claims it’s designed for touch screens in mind, but the basic UI is the same as Vista, you can’t exactly scroll a window without a scrollbar, etc.
For a true tablet experience you need the OS’s window manager and GUI to be written exclusively for abusing the touch screen.

As for price, $700 would actually not be that bad so long as its specs are more like a MacBook and less like an iPod touch. I’m too cheap to buy anything anyway, so it doesn’t really matter.

I think the 2nd picture is more accurate cuz the menubutton wouldn’t be SO useful at the left of the screen

Hmm, well to be fair though, the first picture is from Gizmodo and the second one is what I found on the internet from when the rumors were circulating.
