Finally push notifications for gmail have come via a third party application which is now available on the App Store. The application will notify you when a new email has gone through to your gmail account through sounds/vibrate and text pop up alerts.
The application for now has been pulled off the app store due to the developers having problems with their server. It seems as if they didn’t even know their application got approved, however they are now working on getting their servers back in working shape to be re-released on the app store (no re-approval required).

Quite useful for me
This is really nice. I wish they made something like this for Nokia phones. I will be getting a Nokia 5800 after summer and am expecting lots and lots of apps like iPhone does. So i hope i won't be disappointed with my choice. I'm not getting the iPhone because it's way too expensive. I rather get a touch screen nokia and iPod Touch (witch is the same as iPhone)..

Yeah as a daily iphone user, its extremely handy not have to open mail everytime to check mail but to get notify with a pop up instead.
